THE TYPES OF MEN WOMEN DO NOT NEED AND WHY

If you have been following my Blog, you'll know by now that I AM -

1) Not a Man-Hater or a Taliban-Feminist. I actually do like men and have the priviledge of knowing some of the coolest and fabulous guys around. I am really appreciative of the great guys out there. They make my world into a more interesting playground, to say the least.

2) One of those who does not know how to appreciate women who do not have class, decorum and conviction. I don't care to and I don't want to. Period. That said, I am very grateful for all the wonderful and brilliant women out there. They make my world a better place for sure.

3) Not referring to men and women who are "exceptions to the rule" in my blog posts. There are all kinds of individuals in the world. Some are very complex (such as myself) and some are deeper than most, while others may be difficult to be categorised as this or that. So, what we are sharing here are "general rules and guidelines", so to speak.

4) Taking the time and effort to share because I firmly believe that with higher understanding, we can become better people, improve our relationships with one another, and hopefully, make wiser decisions. Most importantly, it is to arouse constructive thinking and discussions.

5) Not a certified doctor, expert or therapist. Not in the academic sense, anyways. Whatever I have learnt, observed and realised came from real life experiences, coupled by my volunteer counseling community work, and the priceless guidance from various life coaches, teachers and Gurus.

With that "Disclaimer" out of the way, I can now proceed to share what I really want to say. Again, this is a sharing. Not an imposition or a request to conform. After all, no one can make you do anything that you do not want to do unless you believe in it, and agree with it. At the most, I hope this blog post would be helpful.

This blog post is inspired from all real life stories. Some are personal, while the rest are shared from people from all walks of life. Let's face it - men and women look at things differently. It is their different ways of perceiving and understanding that create potential problems. However, both men and women share the same desire of wanting to be loved and to be happy.

Note to the guys: Do not be offended and please do not misunderstand. This is NOT a man-thrashing post. Please read my "Disclaimer" at the top again. I would encourage you guys to read though, because many women have had bad experiences with the following. So, if you want to understand women better, please do continue reading with an open mind.

Note to the gals: This is just a general list. So, please read with an open mind and take only what you find is useful for yourself. Then modify what you identify with to fit you.

The Dating Game and relationships are not easy these days. Whoever said that it was a walk in the park has got to be seriously insane or joking. The number of women who come crying because of bad relationships are astounding, and those who have sworn off dating are right up there too.

If we look at the stats and data, it does not paint a nice picture of the guys. However, I do not believe that guys carry all the blame. Women have some role to play in it too. And I will explain why.

Simple.

It takes two hands to clap, two to dance the tango and definitely two people to form a relationship, to go on a date and even formalise a marriage or divorce. It takes two. Not just one. Therefore, what we should be doing is identifying the bad apples from the whole cart and not just condemn the whole cart because of the bad apples. I know it is not easy. But let us just try.

FIRST OFF -

THE TYPES OF MEN WOMEN WILL NOT MISS AND WHY

1) The Player

Oh, there is no doubt that he is smooth and suave. He knows just how to say all the right things and make all the right moves. Whenever you are with him, he makes you feel like you are the center of his solar system. He is definitely a lot of fun to be with. He knows where to take you and show you a good time. You will not be bored, for sure. He'll call you "darling", "baby", and all the sweet endearing terms sooner than you think.

Problem: He actually does that to and with every other woman, if not all. He can even chat up a barista from Starbucks without blinking. Yes, he is that good. His contact list is bigger than the encyclopedia, and it is not limited to the same country codes. It is his innate gift to make a woman feel like she is a "princess" or "the one and only", but do not be fooled. He is not ready to settle down, not by a million years. He loves the chase, the hunt and it is all like a game to him. He has a mission to sample all the different women on earth, because he truly loves women - all women

WHY YES: You could be a willing participant, and happily go with The Player if you are a player too, or if you are in no mood for anything long term, or if you are recovering from a break up and are looking for a rebound guy, or you just want to have fun and you know you are not going to be the only one in his life.

WHY NO: If you are looking for anything serious and long term, you will have to wait until The Player is done playing with sowing his seeds around the world. And if you are even brave or insane enough to think that you are going to be the one who changes him or tames him, good luck with that.

General Rule of Thumb: Be clear as to what you want. And be very sure that you can play this game without wounding your own heart. Do not dive in without carefully looking beyond the flashy car, shiny suit and sparkly smile. The only time The Player can be considered for anything real and long term is when he is a Retired Player. That means, he has been there, done that in ways you can't even imagine, exhausted his fantasies list and is looking to settle down.

2) The Mama's Boy

They are probably the hardest to spot, because they come in all shapes and sizes. They are sensitive to the women's needs, they seem to understand the plight of women and women's issues well. They can do all the stuff your gay guy friend would do for you but your straight boyfriend will never do - for example, go shopping with you without pulling a long face or complaining. They will even provide valuable feedback on your various tries on clothes and shoes. They appear to have infinite patience and are easy to talk to. Above all, they seem to listen well.

Problem: When it comes to his mother, you will never win. When it comes to his mother, his mother can do no wrong. You will have to take the back seat, when it comes to his mother. If you happen to be so unlucky that his mother is "Godzilla" incarnate, then be prepared to endure a long agonising power struggle with his mother. He will likely side with his mother more than you, because his mother gave birth to him and took care of him all this time. He may always compare your love and care to his mother's.

WHY YES: If you can get along with his mother, then definitely you are able to enjoy a wonderful relationship with The Mama's Boy. If you are the maternal and nurturing type, you will find joy in "mothering" him as well as his own mother. He will definitely be willing to let you boss him around, because he is accustomed to being led by his mother.

WHY NO: If you are not maternal and nurturing type and you are not into mothering a man, then know that The Mama's Boy will exasperate you till kingdom come.Things can only get worse when you do not get along with his mother. All hell might break lose every time you all get together. Because he will soon bring his mother along wherever he goes, whenever he can.

General Rule of Thumb: Be clear as to what you want. And be very sure that you do like his mother as much as you like him. Above all, his mother must also sincerely like you as well. Otherwise, it will be a time bomb waiting to happen. In any case, if he knows how to respect and love his mother without becoming overly attached to her - for example, he can be objective when it came to a situation where by the mother was wrong and you were right - then it is really possible to have something real and concrete with The Mama's Boy.

3) The Married Ones

Yes, it is incredible how many women have been with a married guy or are still with the married guys. They can tell you they love you and their wives do not understand them anymore. They will tell you whatever you need to hear in order to be with you. Actually, let me rephrase that - in order to get inside you. Now, I seriously do not know why some married men feel that they can still go around screwing other women like as if they are bachelors. Honestly, there are only 500 shades of Problem that can arise from any involvement with married men. Nothing good will ever come of it. There are no happy endings for you, him, his wife, his kids and family.

Personally, I have been "propositioned" by some married men in the past, and it just boggles my mind how they can view divorced or single mothers as perfect candidates to be their mistress or girlfriends. They must really think we are just dying to be "saved". The worst are the ones who are rich, powerful and successful because they feel that they are entitled to have it all - wives, one night stands, girlfriends and mistresses.

WHY YES: When you seriously do not care about ethics, morals and the honourable code of conduct. When you blatantly do not care about the wife or the fact that the man is already spoken for. When you care only about how you feel and what you want. In that case, you are just as self centered as the married men themselves. Women like these are the very ones we would love to eject into the Black Hole, along with the cheating cads. Why? Because women like these do not help the sisterhood and the female gender. In fact, there are women who keep throwing themselves at married men (and I know some of them). They are just as responsible for wrecking marriages and family lives as the men. Such women encourage the married men to cheat because they make themselves easily and conveniently available to these men. If the women do not comply and consent, I doubt that the married men will have that many opportunities to cheat.

WHY NO: No matter how you want to phrase it or justify it, this is not a good idea. It is definitely OFF LIMITS. In fact, any "taken" men would not be a good idea - be they married, engaged or are currently someone else's boyfriend. It is the worst kind of betrayal for another woman to take someone else's man - regardless if the man was willing and stupid enough to throw himself at you. They may look and sound like they are hot for you and only you, but do not ever think for a second that they will leave their wives for you. You are no different than the women he has had before you. This relationship is toxic from the very start.

I like what Jenn X wrote in her blog about married men - "Think of yourself as a rental car he used to get from point A to point B.  No one ends up purchasing their rental car at the end of the trip.  It’s not even an option in the contract."

General Rule of Thumb: Avoid at all costs. Do not go near them, do not even flirt with them in any way or form because it encourages them. Seriously, ladies, please have more class, grace and decorum.

4) The Liar, Cheat, Impostor and Con Artist

These are the most patient and charming of the lot. They will take their time to study you, get to know you and spend all their available time with you. In some ways, they would appear like your knight in shining armour or the perfect BF or lover. They appear worldly, experienced and successful in order to appeal to you. To hook you in, they will employ all devices, tactics and drama. Again, I stress, they will not rush in courting you. You may never see it coming. They are masters of disguise and pretense.

Problem: They are not who they say they are. In fact, they may not even exist. Everything or a large portion of what they say and project are fabricated. They do so much in order to get something from the women. Usually, it is material things or a big pay-off at the end.

WHY YES: Are you delusional?

WHY NO: You will end up paying more than you can ever imagine. Seriously. JUST RUN.

Case in point - A friend of mine discovered that her husband of 5 years was actually a conman. He turned out to be someone who pretends to love women and marry them, and then try to get something from each woman. He travelled frequently to different countries on the pretense that it was for business. But these countries are where his other wives reside. Basically, he lived off the women in his life. He pretended to be a successful millionaire in order to gain access to her wealth. After discovering that her husband was not who he said the was, she divorced him. However, it was not without mess and its own grim drama because they had two children together. In the end, she also found that all the jewels and branded goods that he had bought her were all fake. Including her wedding ring. Most of the items he had purchased were from credit card scams.

General Rule of Thumb: Please take the trouble and time to check their backgrounds, google and research. Especially in this internet era, whereby we meet all kinds of people from various places. If we were to find inconsistencies and incomplete stories, those are red flags. The problem is that sometimes women do not perform the due diligence. At this day and age, it pays to be careful and to find out as much as you can. It is not about invading privacy or being a stalker. It is about being careful and well-informed.

5) The Emotionally Inept, The Needy and Clinging Ones

He may seem innocent, decent, sweet and attentive at the very beginning. As time passes on, you would see that you are becoming more of his crutch than his girlfriend. He is in constant need for you to assure him, then re-affirm his worth and even fight for him in a multitude of ways. Yes, he will count and invent the ways for you to do so. What starts out as the right guy will gradually turn into the very wrong guy.

Problem: He will drain you of your mental and emotional well-being. It will be so exhausting for you that fatigue will have a new meaning in your life. You thought you have found the guy who puts you at the center of his universe, but in reality - you are his center of gravity. Without you, he collapses.

Case in point - There was an ex of mine who was something like this. His insecurities demanded that I work to fill in all the gaps in his life. Naturally, it would come to a point that I simply could not. The worse was when he made me feel guilty for not trying hard enough. And God forbade that I could do well in some things which he could not. The power battles were not pretty. I realised that I could cut out my heart and liver to be served on a silver platter to him and it would still not suffice. Finally, I broke it off with him for my own sanity. Of course, he blamed me for everything.

WHY YES: If you are a Superwoman and you want to be the one in charge all the time, 24/7 and that you are prepared to do everything yourself as well as for him, please proceed at your own risk. If you are the saviour type, meaning you like rescuing pets, people and etc. Then you would not be able to help yourself but willingly seek to "save" him too. If you are a Saint and have boundless patience, then you can "baby" him all the way.

WHY NO: You may expire in every sense of the word, before he does. Because at the rate he is depleting you of your energy, time, emotions and etc, you might end up emotionally and mentally bankrupt. Whatever you do for him, will never be enough. He needs constant proof of your love, loyalty and etc. It is likened to a sinking ship with no survivors.

General Rule of Thumb: Some guys are nice as friends, but not more than friends. Know the difference and separate the two. Sometimes, we need to be clear as to what we are capable of as well as our own limitations. Someone else's insecurity and immaturity should never become our fault or failure. Insecurity is a killer in all relationships and friendships. You can read more about it in my older blog post here

As I have mentioned earlier, there are various types of people in the world. The above list does not cover every individual.

There are some who are angry and aggressive to the point of being abusive and violent. They tend to blame everyone and everything else, except themselves. Those are definitely the types to avoid for the sake of one's own safety. I have seen enough battered and punched up faces in my community work than I care to elaborate. It is very sad indeed.

Then there are some who are funny and they make a joke out of everything, especially at our expense. In the end, we would discover that their words are not humorous but hurtful and mean. They can destroy our self-esteem over a period of time. The tragedy is when they bring you down to a level where you can hardly recognise yourself anymore. The funny guy with sting aimed at you is not loving and fun.

The list goes on.

The above mentioned list also applies to women as much as it is to men. There are women players, married females who cheat, daddy's spoilt girls, con women and highly strung women as well. Women are just as capable of wounding and breaking hearts as men.

I know of several men who have been "damaged" by unpleasant women. Some women have left their husbands and kids to run off with their new man. Some have repeatedly cheated on their husbands with no less than their husband's close friends. As if cheating with strangers is not bad enough. Then, there are the husbands who got beaten up by their wives. Though they are few and rare, it exists.

In fact, some of the most prolific male Players I know have confessed that they were originally hurt by the women they have loved early in life. And because they do not wish to experience that pain again, they evolved into the Players we see today. Having said that, not all Players have been hurt by women before. Some are just born that way.

The classic cases are the men who married "trophy women" and later found out that their "trophy wives" are more than they could handle. Some of these gorgeous "trophy wives" are what I like to call "High Maintenance Bitches". They spend money as fast as they can guzzle down a bottle of Dom Perignon. They like to congregate among themselves and compare notes or gossip about other women. They are always well made-up and carrying a Hermes Birkin or Chanel bag with the colourful scarves tied around the handles just so. Most of their conversations are as caustic as their personalities.

I usually steer as far away from these women as possible. They scare the living daylgihts out of me. Though I do sympathize with their husbands, I cannot say that the husbands are innocent. After all, the men have chosen these women and made their beds with them. So, they should lie in them. If they do not like it anymore, then they should be honourable enough to release each other from the bondage of matrimony.

What these married men should not do is fool around with other women and mislead them into thinking that they will leave their wives in due time. The correct thing to do would be to bite the bullet, end the marriage first and then start anew. However, all options and avenues must be exhausted and fully explored before seeking the D-word, i.e. Divorce.

Generally, we all are beings who have become the way we are today due to our past. Be it good or bad, rightly or wrongly, we have been influenced and moulded by our past experiences. Even our thoughts and how respond to situations or people are all engineered from our past experiences. Therefore, how we engage with someone today is a culmination of what we had previously endured.

This is not to justify our behaviour and thoughts as being right. It is merely to explain. Which is why I stress on the importance of understanding. The more we discover, learn and understand, the more we can rid ourselves of the garbage of our past. As we mature and evolve, we would not need to hang onto our past ideologies or mistakes. Moreover, we would not make the current people in our lives pay for the pains created by the people in our past.

So, whether we choose to be alone or go back into the dating scenes, it is really up to us. As long as we exercise due diligence and are clear as to what we want, we would not confuse the people around us as well. Many guys have shared about being in love with women who are clueless and they become frustrated in the process. These women do not have a clear idea of what they want. Hence, the men become lost along with them.

At all times, please do not dive in without carefully looking beyond the well crafted surfaces. Sometimes, the only way we can only get to know the real colours of an individual is when trouble brews. Other times, it is less complicated and we should always be thankful for that.

Personally, I have always valued sincerity, honesty and kindness in a person. I find people who do not need to pretend, hide, lie or play games truly refreshing. Above all, someone who has a decent moral compass and a set of good values. So, I would start with those qualities first and foremost.

How you would choose to start is entirely up to you.

As always, know what you want and understand who you are. Then it becomes easier to communicate that to someone else. When we do not know what we want or who we are, we get lost and easily distracted. We might even make the wrong choice in a partner.

When the partner is the right one, s/he can even bring out the best in us. And we can do the same for them.

When the partner is the wrong one, s/he can create hell in our lives every minute of the day. And we can unleash the wrath of hell on them as well.

Do not confuse other feelings like lust and etc with love. Real love takes time, development and some sacrifices. Real love is patient, kind and shows no jealousy. Above all, real love encourages one another to grow.

They say that taking the time to love and be loved is the priviledge of Gods. I say that we all deserve the Godly priviledges because we are Gods and Goddesses of the earth. We are definitely worth the time and effort for someone who treasures us, as we would value them in the same way.

Good luck and happy loving.

I shall leave you all with a quote from Mary Manin Morrissey ~

"Start living now. Stop saving the good china for that special occasion. Stop withholding your love until that special person materializes. Every day you are alive is a special occasion. Every minute, every breath, is a gift from God."

Chapter Five: EAST OF THE HEART

Chapter Five: The Great Plan

1925 – George Town, Penang

Mei Yee did not go down to the formal dining room to join Mrs. Wong and the other ladies in the household for dinner. In fact, she had not left her room since her late lunch. Ah Ping conveyed to the matriarch of the Wong family that Mei Yee was suffering from a splitting headache, and had requested to be allowed to rest in her attic room. Mrs. Wong, who was only concerned that the bride-to-be must be well and prepared for the wedding ceremony, gladly granted Mei Yee the leave of absence. She then took the liberty to arrange a light dinner to be sent up to Mei Yee.

Ah Ping knew only too well that her mistress had lost all her appetite to eat. When she returned to the attic with the dinner tray, she found Mei Yee staring out of the window. The sun had already set, leaving the sky with a charcoal grey hue. There was no wind or stars, only a melancholy stillness to accompany the devastated Mei Yee. Ah Ping did not utter a single word but quietly placed the dinner tray on the table, and left the room. She was careful not to disturb her mistress who was deep in her thoughts, and wrought up over her feelings.

As Mei Yee gazed into the darkness of the city, her mind returned to her mother in Fujian. She was still much incensed with hostility against her mother. She kept asking, WHY? WHY? WHY would her own mother do this to her? The more she questioned, the more hateful she became towards her mother. There would be no forgiveness from her. She was unrelenting. In truth, she would no longer regard herself as a part of the “Lim family”. Most of all, she would cease carrying the responsibility of honouring the family’s name. They had clearly meant to abandon her in the worst possible way. Hence, Mei Yee would reciprocate with the same renunciation. She reached into her silken pocket and took out the jade bracelet that her mother had given her before she left the village.

Ever since Mei Yee arrived in Penang, she has been holding onto the bracelet like it was a priceless treasure. She did not even dare wear the bracelet, as she felt that she was unworthy. The jade bracelet was the only connection she had to her mother and her village. So, she kept it in her pocket and only held it each time she felt homesick. However, now looking at it, she felt nothing but disgust. Mei Yee took hold of the bracelet and smashed it on the windowpane. The crackling sounds reverberated with Mei Yee’s shattered heart. Then Mei Yee flung the broken pieces of the jade out of the window. That very ritual sealed her status as an orphan. She then erased all the memories of her past. She made a vow that she would not shed another tear for as long as she lived.

The very next morning when Ah Ping came to the room with a breakfast tray, she announced that Mrs. Wong had excused Mei Yee for the entire day. Mrs. Wong wanted to make sure that her soon-to-be daughter-in-law was well rested. Mei Yee was thankful for not having to appear before the rest of the ladies in the family. She still did not know how to face Ai Ling and Sun Lee. Knowing what she knew now, she could not bring herself to be in the same room as the two women. Despite how much she could feel their contempt for her, she felt she deserved every ounce of it.

“I need you to do something very important for me, Ah Ping.” Mei Yee said in a somber tone.

Ah Ping’s heart skipped a beat. This was the first time she has ever heard her mistress speak in such a grave voice. Instantly, she stopped clearing the breakfast tray and stood still.

“Yes, mistress Mei Yee. What would you like me to do for you?” Ah Ping was almost afraid to hear her mistress’s answer.

“There is no one here that I trust, but you. I need you to promise me that you will do this for me and you will not tell a single soul.” Mei Yee stared hard at her personal attendant friend.

Ah Ping kept silent but nodded her head.

“Can I really count on you, Ah Ping?” Mei Yee asked firmly.

Ah Ping nodded again, without saying a word.

“I mean it. You cannot tell anyone, and you must do exactly as I tell you. You promise?” Mei Yee insisted.

Ah Ping finally replied, “Yes. I promise, mistress.”

“Good. I am really counting on you. So, please do not let me down.” Mei Yee said seriously.

“I will not let you down, mistress. I really promise.” Ah Ping assured her mistress.

“All right. I believe you. Now, this is what I want you to do for me.” Mei Yee said and pulled Ah Ping closer to her. She proceeded to whisper her instructions into Ah Ping’s ears.

Before Mei Yee could finish her sentences, Ah Ping’s face turned white. She looked at her mistress in disbelief.

“But mistress…” Ah Ping began, but Mei Yee stopped her from speaking further.

“It is what I want you to do and you already promised me that you will carry it out for me. So, please save your words. Say no more. Just do the deed as I have instructed.” Mei Yee was adamant.

Ah Ping was too shocked to move or blink. She continued to stare at her mistress with fear in her eyes.

“This is really what I want. So, please go now and get it done for me. I shall wait for your return. Again, remember not a word to anyone about this.” Mei Yee warned Ah Ping.

As Ah Ping did not budge, Mei Yee stood up from the chair and pushed her out of the door.

“Do not come back until you have got it. Please make sure that no one sees you. Wrap it carefully in your handkerchief. Now, go!” With those words, Mei Yee closed the door behind Ah Ping.

The young personal attendant stood outside her mistress’s door for a while. She did not know what she should do, but she had already made a promise. Thus, she must fulfill that promise. After she had gathered herself, she walked towards the small door and disappeared into the network of stairs and alleys behind the walls. She headed towards the direction of the main kitchen. Despite how deeply perplexed she felt, Ah Ping knew that she had to make good on her promise to her mistress. So, she walked silently with tears running down her face.

The sun had risen directly above the Wong mansion, casting a scorching heat upon all its inhabitants. It was exactly noon sharp when Ah Ping returned to the attic. This time, she brought a tray containing a teapot and two small teacups. Mei Yee had been waiting for her anxiously. When she saw Ah Ping, she immediately pulled her to the middle of the room.

“Have you got what I asked you to bring? “ Mei Yee asked eagerly.

“Yes, but…” Before Ah Ping could finish her sentence, Mei Yee directed her to show the requested item.

Ah Ping gave a heavy sigh and reached into her pocket. She took out a carefully wrapped handkerchief. There was something inside it. Together, the two ladies stood staring at the object in Ah Ping’s hand.

“Are you sure this is it?” Mei Yee had to be certain. There was no room for mistakes.

“Yes, I extracted it myself from the kitchen storage.” Ah Ping explained.

“And no one saw you in all this time?” Mei Yee asked nervously.

“No one saw me.” Ah Ping replied with sadness.

“Good. Very good. Thank you for doing this for me. I am very grateful. Now, please leave the handkerchief on the tray and go. I need to be alone.” Mei Yee spoke in her serious tone again.

Ah Ping did not want to leave and yet she knew that it was pointless in staying. Her mistress had made up her mind and there was nothing she could say or do. A part of her felt responsible for what her mistress was about to do.

Sensing Ah Ping’s reluctance to depart from the room, Mei Yee said, “I do thank you for everything that you have done for me, Ah Ping. You are the only person who has been kind to me without asking for anything in return. I wish there was a way I could repay you, but it has to be in another lifetime. You must leave me now. Thank you again.”

Tears started swelling in Ah Ping’s eyes again. She could not help herself. Mei Yee walked towards the crying girl and embraced her like a sister would.

“There now. Don’t be silly. Everything will be fine after this. Don’t cry anymore.” Mei Yee said gently.

Ah Ping held Mei Yee tightly and sobbed even more. After she had recovered, Mei Yee reminded her that it was time to go. Silently, Ah Ping walked out of the attic room and collapsed outside the door. She buried her head between her knees and continued to cry uncontrollably.

Inside the room, Mei Yee was re-arranging the tray to face her. She admired the pretty china teapot and teacups. Mrs. Wong certainly had a refined taste in everything she bought. The blue intricate designs on the china suggested an artistic influence of the Ming dynasty. Hence, they must have been very expensive. The Wongs would certainly not use anything less.

Mei Yee smiled as she poured the tea into the two cups. Then with great care, she unwrapped the handkerchief. Nestled in the white cotton fabric, was a folded piece of pink paper. After spreading out the paper, she could see the white powder. Ah Ping had delivered her promise, and brought the rat poison to Mei Yee.

Such a small amount it was, but fatal enough to kill a buffalo, Mei Yee mused.

Mei Yee lifted the pink paper and dropped the powder into one of the teacups. Nothing was wasted. Everything dissolved into the tea instantly.

Before her, sat the two beautiful teacups – one was filled with an ordinary Oolong tea, and the other was drenched in rat poison.

Mei Yee had two options laid out in front of her.

Option one – drink the ordinary Oolong tea and get married in less than 2 weeks. Her husband would never really be her husband in every sense of the word. In fact, she may not even see much of her husband. They may never be in the same room if Mrs. Wong had her way. From the wedding night onwards, Mei Yee would have to surrender to the fact that she was to be desecrated by her husband’s elder brothers. They each would take their turn in violating her until she was pregnant with child. However, if the child she bore was not a male child then the process would be repeated until the profane mission was accomplished. She would have to continue living in the household pretending that it was all a natural course of propagation, and not some repulsive fornication. She would have to look at the grim faces of her sisters-in-law every single day and feign her innocence in the whole marital charade. As long as Mei Yee complied with the Wong family, she would live in the confines of opulence, abundance and extravagance. She would never have to worry about not having enough to eat or wear. Mrs. Wong would ensure that everything would be provided for her. However, the real question remained tugging at her mind. Could she really live every day of the rest of her life like that? And if she could not and would not, then she would have to seriously consider the second teacup.

Option two – drink the rat poison infused tea and die instantly. Her life would end and everything would stop here. There would be no wedding, no husband and no dishonoring of her entire being by her husband’s brothers. There would be no future, no fear, and no shame. Along with those, there would also be the death of her hopes and dreams. She would not have any opportunity to make something of herself. Most of all, there would be no chance at real happiness and a life worth living. All would be lost and denied from the moment her last breath left her body. Could she really condemn herself to a life cut short due to the offensive circumstances? Would she not regret? More than anything else, all Mei Yee wanted was a chance – a chance to live a life defined by her own terms. Could she really go through with killing herself? Did she really want to die in the first place?

Mei Yee sat for what seemed like an eternity, staring at the two teacups. Each presented two very different and frightening paths. Yet that was all she had. There was nothing else left for her. Both of the options were variations of Hell – one was on earth and the other would take place in the after-life. None of them were good enough, but what could she do?

Unwilling to abdicate the possibility of a better future for herself, she hacked into the deep recesses of her mind and forced herself to think very hard. She desperately needed a third option. Is there one to be found?

Then it hit her.

The third option uncloaked the confusion in her mind. It came to her like a flash of lightning.

The third option showed her what she had to do. If she planned it well and did it right, she would have a chance. Within Mei Yee, hope began to simmer.

Option Three was a real possibility. Option Three meant hope and a pathway to her dreams.

Mei Yee decided to choose Option Three.

Without a second thought, Mei Yee knocked down the two teacups before her and stood up triumphantly.

Ah Ping heard the strange noises from outside the door. She feared the worst had happened. So, she quickly rushed into the room and was surprised to find that her mistress was very much alive. She did not quite understand what had transpired, but was extremely relieved to know that her mistress had chosen not to proceed with the suicide.

Mei Yee smiled at Ah Ping. It was no ordinary smile. Optimism was rising in the horizon, and she was ready to seize it. It was time to plan something great.

Story Two from "A Symphony of Short Stories"

Story Two: THE FREQUENT FLYER

I love my job.

I love how my job allows me to travel the world, and meet all sorts of interesting people along the way. I love how my company pays me to fly first class, and I get to accumulate the frequent flyer points to redeem for my personal rendezvous. My company never questions my schedules, but applauds the deals I close. I have the biggest office in the whole building, and my tax returns exceed my secretary’s one year’s salary. In my organization, they call me GOD.

More than anything else in this world, what I love is the freedom that comes with being in a different city every month. As soon as I settle into the elegant spacious first class seat, the ladies in uniform would serve me anything I wish.  The minute they notice that I don’t wear a ring on my finger they would start flirting with me shamelessly. Dare I say, some of the best action I have ever come across was “on air”.

There is nothing more attractive to a woman than a man sitting in first class without a wedding band on his finger. This opens up all kinds of possibilities for both the man and the women who are willing. There are some women who just want to have fun. None are more impetuous than those who are going away for a girlie weekend. They don’t bother asking if I am married, single, divorced or widowed. And these are the very type of women I find most appealing - the ones who don’t ask, don’t care and I won’t ever see them again after one night.

Here, we are all consenting adults. There are no illusions.

Story One: THE WAIT-LIST

Today, I received a special delivery from Fedex.

It's from Richard.

He is still in Paris but wanted to send me something really important, so his text message said. He added that he would be back in a month’s time.

Excitedly, I opened the slim package. Inside the brown envelope was an ornate ivory card. It looked very much like a wedding invite. My heart froze. With a slight tremor, I opened the card. There was a hand written note inside.

 It reads:

“Amanda, you know that you are the most important person in my life. So, this is why you are the first person to receive my wedding invite. Yes, I am getting married! I still can’t believe it! I met the most wonderful woman. Her name is Simone. She is stunning and I know you two will hit it off instantly. I can’t wait for you to meet her next month! As you are my best buddy in the world, it would mean a lot to me if you’d be my “Best Man”. Well, it’s “Best Mate” in your case! Please say yes! Love you!

Rich”

I stared at the words over and over again, hoping that the meaning would change every time I looked at it.

How did this happen?
Why is the right man for me marrying someone else?
Where did I go wrong?

Woman, Wife, Whore & Spirituality - Part One

Realization came, late and still unwelcomed.

I am not present.

Not in my newly renovated apartment, not eating dinner in my parents' house, not checking my daughter's homework and finding out how she is coping in her new school. Not involved with my dad's companies. Not catching up with my close friends in Bangsar. Not madly rushing from the airport to another meeting.

I could walk the streets day and night, country to country, looking for some clues in every corner, in every person, and in every open arms. I could knock on every single door, apologetic and inquisitive, and I still wouldn’t find any remnant of a real answer.

I am simply not here.

Here is where I have been avoiding all my life.

I could be found everywhere else but here, because here is where everything will come to light. So, I yearned to be away from everyone and everything that would reflect the starkness of the truth.

I am still stuck in that place, somewhere between awakening and nostalgia, crying my goodbyes, on the balcony of revelations, unable or unwilling to let go of the railings, to see what lies ahead and what had come to pass.

My absence hangs over me like a dreaded gloom. Like the certainty that I lost when I decided to escape. I walk around looking for a ghost. Not anyone's, but mine. The ghost of a person I used to be before it all started. Or during. Dozens of people I have made myself into, with unrestraint disguises, creative excuses, innovative facades, utmost indifference. All of them are still evident, here, in Bangsar, in London, and in all the places which I have ever went to. And the latest version of me, created by my abject absence, is trying to find all of them, the different episodes of the same story, and put them back together. I’ve met some of them in the last two months.

I found March 1992, sitting in London’s Harvard Court, all dizzy and drenched with euphoria. She had just turned 21 and lost her veiled innocence to some American bloke. She thought that her feminine shackles have been broken at long last and she could taste freedom in whatever size or colour. No longer would her worth as a woman be measured by what laid between her legs. Or so she thought.

April 1996 was standing outside my old house in Oklahoma, checking out her new toys. She had just opened her dance club in the city and made some money. So, she bought herself things she did not need but wanted to keep at hand just so they could assert her status in life. She winked at me and showed off her Porsche 968 Convertible, her Harley Davidson Fat Boy and Range Rover. At the corner of her garage was a Jet Ski.

Men of all ages and colours were fawning over August 1996. Even women were throwing themselves at her. For the lack of a better word, she was spoilt for choice. There was this constant self-indulgent grin on her face. She was the epitomy of HIP PARTY CHICK.

January 1998 was quite perplexed. She saw death and life in that one month. Her grandfather had passed away quite suddenly, but a boy had knelt down on one knee in the airport, and proposed to her. While her eyes mourned, her heart leapt for joy.

April 1998 was crying frantically, constantly pressing the redial button. Her fiance haven’t spoken with her for two days. From what I understood, both of them have had a really big fight. She couldn’t understand what was taking him so long to come back from Vancouver, and entertained the thought that perhaps he might have had second thoughts.

I saw July 1999 crouching in a corner. She whispered, “It’s been 4 months into our marriage, and I am still learning. Sometimes, I feel quite helpless. I don’t know what goes on in his head sometimes. At nights, we sit in bed, he is reading and I am writing. It seems that we just go about our business quietly, careful not to disturb one another. And I fear that the silence does not equate to any sort of peace”.

I bumped into a frazzled December 1999. “I miss him”, she said, and then, with a sheepish smile, she confessed: “We are expecting our first child next March”.

May 2000 was prancing up and down with anxiety. She said that the baby has helped in keeping her really busy. She said that her husband comes home very late from work these days. And that he has to eat dinner alone, and that the both of you hardly talk and share anymore. Physical intimacy has evolved into playing with the baby together, and she putting plasters on his back.

I came across September 2000 lying in bed, all clenched up. She was mumbling, “I am a terrible mother and wife. No one believes me, but I know, deep down inside, I know the truth. If I were so good, our lives wouldn’t be like this. This is a nightmare!”

I was not surprised to bump into February 2002 standing almost steel-like infront of the Judge at the Divorce Courts. She saw me from the corner of her eyes. I was certain she did see me, but she did not flinch or move a muscle. Her eyes were fixed at the Judge and answered, "Yes".

October 2003 was a sight of wreckage. She didn’t want to talk at all. She had just buried her beloved grandmother and had not come out of her room for 5 days.

I suggested a reunion, a meeting to discuss our situation. They all dismissed it as a very bad idea, and have avoided me ever since.

I suspect that, each in their own way, blame me for what has happened. For not holding on to the good times, for letting things get this bad, for not believing in love enough, or believing in it too much. They don’t want to be reunited, because we don’t belong in the same place. We all exist in different times, different dimensions. We no longer have anything in common with one another. They consider me a completely alien being. If they are the chapters of our story, I am the epilogue. I am the conclusion, one that they wouldn’t have come to understand themselves. To each of them, I am an abstract term. Impossible to define. So, it’s true what they say about the past being a foreign country. Indeed, we do things so differently there.

Hence, my absence is much stronger than my presence.

There were times when I used to sleep next to a warm body, and I had never felt more alone. But the times when I began sleeping on my own, I started to feel the space and freedom I have been yearning for.

In the strangest way, my absence is with me all the time. It has ways of making itself known – just like the jingling of keys to my new home, the turn of the door knob to an empty place when my daughter goes off to stay with her father, the smell of the hotel room in each country during my business travels, the scent of innocence that once was – they all announced the presence of my absence.

At night, I sleep on the right side of the bed. Though I’ve tried my hardest to move towards the middle, to make most of the unexpected space, I still lie on my allocated side, careful not to disturb my absence, sound asleep next to me.

And in the daytime, I walk around the streets and talk to myself. Together, we try to figure it out. So far, we haven’t been successful. The issues we concern ourselves with, are painful ones.

Could this be, as my absence said, our destiny? And in that case, can destiny be bad for you? Could one choose happiness over fate, or would that be considered blasphemy?

My absence follows me down paths none of us have been before. Every now and then, it smiles a smile that implies superiority that seems to confirm the pointlessness of these walks and talks. Sometimes, when everything goes quiet for a while, I can hear it talking to me.

“What are you doing?” It asks. “Why are you pretending to be looking for answers, when we both know who you are really trying to find?”
